Examine the outside Condensing Unit

Make sure your condensing unit isn’t covered. This will damage the cooling system. Remove all items near or on the condensing unit. Also, resist the urge to temporarily store or plant anything near the condensing unit. This could become a permanent habit that could cost you thousands of dollars.

Check Out Your Air Conditioner Ahead of Time

Always turn on your air conditioner before summer starts to make sure it’s working. Turn it on and let it run for a few minutes. There’s nothing worse than finding that your air conditioner isn’t working during a heat wave.

Routinely Change Your Air Filters

Regularly changing air filters is the best thing you can do for your air conditioning. Filters that aren’t clean reduce efficiency and block airflow in your home. Keeping your filters clean helps reduce the number of repairs on your air conditioner and prevents freeze-ups.

Inspect the Access Panels

Routinely check to ensure that access panels are in place, properly secured, and clean.

Check for Impediments

Remove all observable impediments near the exterior of the unit or the supply and return vents.

Check Your Thermostat’s Thermal Mode

Make sure your thermostat is set to cooling or heating mode and the fan to auto mode, and change the batteries about every two years.

Lower Your Thermostat

Turn it down a few degrees. This can save you 5% or more on your heating bill. Also, turn down the heat whenever you leave your home for a few hours.

Watch That Water Heater

Turn down your water heater a few degrees. For example, if you turn it down to 120 degrees from about 140 degrees, you probably won’t notice a difference in your hot water, but you will save money.

Consider a Programmable Thermostat

It’s worth the money to install one. Over the course of a year, it will help lower your heating bills and eventually pay for itself. A programmable thermostat allows you to adjust the heat on a schedule, allowing you to lower the heat when you’re not home.

Don’t Let Heat Escape Unnecessarily

Check your doors and windows for air leaks. Close the flue on your fireplace when it isn’t in use. Fewer openings mean less heat loss.

Keep Windows Covered

This will help you reduce heat and cooling losses during the winter and summer months. This practice especially helps if you have older windows.

Make Sure Your Heat Pump or Furnace Is Clear

Check the exterior of your heating unit. Avoid storing anything near or against the heat pump. Also, hose down the outside of your unit to clear it of leaves, dirt, and grass. If your indoor unit has excess water around it, check to see if the condensate drain and pan are blocked.
